Efter debutframgången med Ormen blev Stig Dagerman författare på heltid. Sommaren 1946 satt han och skrev på en uppföljare ute på strindbergska Kymmendö.

De dömdas ö är berättelsen om sju skeppsbrutna som går less than på en obebodd ö, complete av vämjeliga djur och skrämmande natur. Ämnet för romanen är skräcken.
